Commercial Raw

This list is a work in progress. If you have questions about a particular brand please ask in the group. These are frozen foods, although many of these companies also make freeze-dried formulas - we have a separate file for freeze-dried meals. We have divided our lists by country: USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and the Netherlands. Unlike the canned food list, this raw list is just a list, it is in no means that we recommend all the foods on this list
We have highlighted nutrient values that are very high in red or very low in blue in comparison to the diet of AAFCO 2018 (minimums) and free-ranging feral cats by referencing the calculated values from the paper by Plantinga et al. (2011) as a guide (see table below). We feel that this is one of the best papers out there examining the natural diet of domestic cats. The authors selected 28 studies and used the stomach content data from more than 6,000 cats (that is pretty darn good!).

It is a useful paper to compare raw diets with; however, many raw diets do use some synthetic nutrients and thus we have combined it with AAFCO 2018 minimums which are designed for commercial foods that include synthetic vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Here is how they compare:

*For fat, we only highlighted in red, values that were 10% higher than the ideal range as many cats can tolerate higher fat diets.
**The calcium to phosphorus ratio can be lower than 1.40, but we don’t want it to be less than 1 as this can increase the absorption of phosphorus.

N.B. if a food doesn’t say complete and balanced - it is most likely not. If you’re not sure, it’s always best to ask the company for a Typical Nutrient Analysis (this is conducted by a third party, so not a Target Nutrient Analysis, which is an estimation by the company using a computer software). In addition, there were some companies in the USA and Canada that did not get back to us, or gave us incorrect or incomplete values. We may try again at a later date, but if you see there is no information in our list, and you are interested in that food, you can try and contact them.
